Overview
The University of Genoa is the only university in Liguria and the natural home for anything connected to the sea. Naval architecture, marine engineering, logistics, marine biology and port economics are all taught here, drawing on the city’s identity as one of the Mediterranean’s main ports. Beyond that, the engineering school has well-established groups in robotics, bioengineering, computer engineering and energy, and there are full faculties of medicine, pharmacy, architecture, economics, law and the humanities.
English-taught degrees are mostly at master’s level, in fields such as engineering, robotics, data science, economics and maritime subjects, while bachelor’s degrees are nearly all in Italian. The university also runs a number of programmes at smaller sites in Savona, Imperia and La Spezia, so students should always confirm where their course is delivered. The international office handles admissions and provides support with residence permits and income documentation.
Genoa is a city of contrasts: a medieval old town, a renovated old port, steep hills climbed by lifts and funiculars, and the Riviera coast a short train ride away. It is less touristed than Florence or Venice and costs are moderate. Student life centres on the old town and the Albaro district near the engineering faculty and the beach.
Who it suits
Genoa suits engineering students with maritime, naval, robotics or energy interests, marine and life science applicants, and anyone who wants a sea-side city with reasonable costs. It fits applicants who are prepared to study in Italian or who have found one of the English master’s programmes, and who are not put off by a compact, hilly urban layout.
What to check before applying
- Confirm the city and campus where your programme is taught, as some run outside Genoa.
- Check the language of instruction and the certificate required.
- Apply to ALiSEO for housing and grants when the annual call opens.
- Review the entrance tests for engineering, medicine and architecture.
- Consider transport between the hills and the waterfront before choosing a flat.
