Tuition fees

State university: tuition is an income-based contribution calculated from the family's ISEE indicator (or the equivalent ISEE-parificato for non-EU students), with reductions and exemptions for lower income bands and for students who meet merit conditions; a regional right-to-study tax is added. Non-EU students who cannot document income usually pay the top band for that programme.

Campus and city

The main Ateneo building and several departments are in the centre near the station, with the Policlinico hospital campus for medicine and science departments on the city's edge. Bari is a large, lively port city on the Adriatic with a historic old town, a long seafront and warm weather most of the year.

Housing

ADISU Puglia, the regional right-to-study body, provides residences and grants for eligible students; private rents in Bari are among the lowest of any large Italian city, and shared flats near the university are easy to find.

Overview

The University of Bari Aldo Moro is the main university of Apulia and one of the largest in the south. It is a comprehensive state university with full faculties of medicine, pharmacy, law, economics, agriculture, sciences and humanities, and it serves a large regional population. The Politecnico di Bari, a separate institution, handles engineering and architecture, so applicants in those fields should look there instead.

Teaching is overwhelmingly in Italian. There is a small set of English-taught master’s degrees in areas such as economics, computer science and some sciences, but students who want to come here should plan to learn Italian to a good level before or during their first year. The international office provides admission guidance for non-EU students and assistance with residence permits and fee calculation based on income documents.

The main reason we include Bari is cost and climate. Rents and daily expenses are far below the north, the city sits on the Adriatic with a seafront promenade and a historic old town, and the weather is warm for most of the year. The city is busy and a little rough around the edges, but it has a large student population and a growing international airport with direct connections across Europe.

Who it suits

Bari suits students who are prepared to study in Italian, who are working to a strict budget, and who want a warm coastal city, particularly in medicine, pharmacy, law, agriculture and the sciences. It is less suitable for applicants who need an English-taught degree, who should look at the few English master’s programmes or consider other cities.

What to check before applying

  • Confirm whether your programme has an English-taught option; most do not.
  • Check the Italian language certificate level required for Italian-taught degrees.
  • Apply to ADISU Puglia for housing and grants when the call opens.
  • Review the entrance tests for medicine, pharmacy and health professions.
  • For engineering or architecture, apply to the Politecnico di Bari instead.
